The Perfect 10-Day Oahu Itinerary (Beaches, Adventure & Hidden Gems)

10-Day Oahu Itinerary

If you’re searching for the perfect 10 day Oahu itinerary, this guide will walk you through everything you need to plan your trip. I’ve been to Oahu twice now, which has given me the chance to experience a wide range of what the island has to offer – from adventure activities and scenic hikes to some of the most beautiful beaches and unique dining spots.

Oahu is one of the best Hawaiian islands if you’re someone who likes to stay active and pack your days with a mix of experiences. There’s truly no shortage of things to do in Oahu, and it’s the perfect destination for anyone who wants a well-rounded itinerary that goes beyond just relaxing at a resort.

This 10 day Oahu itinerary includes all of my favorite experiences from both trips, combining iconic must-do activities with a few lesser-known spots to help you make the most of your time on the island. If you’re looking for an Oahu itinerary 10 days long that balances adventure, beaches, and great food, this guide covers it all.

Where to Stay in Oahu

If it’s your first time visiting Oahu, I’d recommend staying in Waikiki or splitting your time between Waikiki and the North Shore as part of your 10 day Oahu itinerary. Waikiki is the most convenient base for restaurants, beaches, and tours, while the North Shore offers a much more relaxed, local, and scenic experience.

Waikiki Hotels I’ve Stayed At

Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort

The Hilton Hawaiian Village is one of the most popular resorts in Waikiki. It’s essentially its own little village, with multiple pools, restaurants, shops, and direct beach access all in one place. It’s a great option if you want a lively resort-style stay right on the beach.

Alohilani Resort Waikiki Beach

Alohilani Resort has a much more modern feel compared to some of the larger Waikiki hotels. It’s located across from the beach and has a nice infinity style pool with views of the ocean.

Hilton Hawaiian Village Oahu

The Ritz-Carlton Oahu, Turtle Bay

If you’re looking for a more peaceful and luxury experience away from the crowds of Waikiki, I highly recommend considering a stay at The Ritz-Carlton O’ahu, Turtle Bay which is located on the North Shore.

While I haven’t stayed here (yet), I did visit for sunset happy hour and it ended up being one of the highlights of our trip. The setting is absolutely stunning – right on the coastline. The food and drinks were great, the sunset was unreal, and the overall vibe felt much more relaxed and luxurious compared to Waikiki.

Do You Need a Rental Car in Oahu?

Yes – unless you plan to stay strictly within the Waikiki hotel zone (which I personally wouldn’t recommend), having a rental car is a must for any 10 day Oahu itinerary. Many of the best activities around the island require a car, and it’s really the only way to fully explore everything Oahu has to offer. I like to use Expedia to book my rental cars.

That said, keep in mind that most hotels charge a nightly parking fee, which can be pretty expensive. When we stayed at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, we ended up paying $70 per night just for parking.

If you’re looking to save on parking costs and some of the additional resort fees, it may be worth considering Airbnb or vacation rental options instead.

Here is my complete 10 Day Oahu Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival and Waikiki Dinner

Start your trip by arriving in Oahu, picking up your rental car, and settling into your hotel. I don’t like to plan much for arrival day – after a long travel day, it’s best to keep things simple and give yourself time to relax and ease into the trip.

For dinner, I recommend staying in Waikiki to keep things easy. Hula Grill is always a go-to for us and is within walking distance from most Waikiki hotels. It’s right on the beach with a really fun, laid-back island vibe and great views – especially if you can time it around sunset.

Hilton Hawaiian Village Pool

Day 2: Dolphin Swim & Scenic Dinner

Start your 10 day Oahu itinerary by getting out on the water with a dolphin swimming and snorkeling tour. In my opinion, there’s no better way to kick off a Hawaii trip than getting in the ocean and experiencing the marine life right away. Our tour brought us to two incredible spots where we were able to swim alongside dolphins, plus an additional stop where we snorkeled with sea turtles. Most tours leave early in the morning, so plan for an early start – but it’s absolutely worth it. Check availability and book your dolphin swim and snorkel tour.

After a full day on the water, head to one of my favorite dinner spots on the island: Haleiwa Joe’s at Haiku Gardens. This is hands down my number one dinner recommendation in Oahu. The setting is stunning – you’re essentially dining in the middle of a lush tropical garden surrounded by mountains and greenery. Haleiwa Joe’s doesn’t take reservations, so I recommend arriving early or being prepared for a wait – it’s popular for a reason!

Oahu Snorkeling

Day 3: Hike & Zip Line Adventure

If you’re up for a morning adventure, start your day with the Crouching Lion Hike. This is not a maintained trail, and there’s a section that involves ropes and some light rock scrambling, so make sure you feel comfortable with that before going. If you’re afraid of heights (like me), this part can definitely feel a little intimidating. That said, the views at the top are absolutely worth it. You’ll get sweeping views of the coastline and the bay below. It’s one of those hikes that makes you feel like you’ve found something a little more off-the-beaten-path.

Crouching Lion Hike Oahu

After your hike, continue the adventure with a zip line tour on the North Shore. I loved this course – it’s set in a really beautiful location, and several of the lines have incredible ocean views as you zip across. Check availability and browse zip line course options so you can book your tour – we did ours with CLIMB Works on the North Shore.

Day 4: Shark Cage Diving & Sunset Sail

Start your day with shark cage diving on the North Shore. This was my absolute favorite activity of the entire trip and something I would recommend to anyone visiting Oahu. It’s such a unique experience being in the water up close with the sharks. We were lucky enough to have a very small tour with just us and one other person so we got lots of time in the cage. Check availability and book your own shark cage adventure.

Shark Cage Diving Oahu North Shore

After your tour, head to Haleiwa town and grab lunch at Haleiwa Bowls. They have some of the best acai bowls on the island and it’s the perfect refreshing stop after being out on the water.

End the day back in Waikiki with a sunset and fireworks sail. This is such a great, low-key way to wind down after a more adventurous day. Being out on the water at sunset with views of the Waikiki skyline is beautiful. I’d recommend going on a Friday so you also get to see the fireworks from the boat. Check availability and book your sunset and fireworks cruise.

Oahu Sunset Cruise

Day 5: Jurassic Valley & Beach Day

Start your day early and head to Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden. You’ve probably seen the famous driveway all over Instagram – it’s one of the most iconic photo spots on the island. While you’re no longer allowed to stop your car in the middle of the road for photos, you can still get a great video while driving through, and there are plenty of other scenic areas throughout the garden where you can stop and explore.

botanical garden

After the botanical garden, make your way to Kualoa Ranch for one of their tours. This area is often referred to as “Jurassic Valley” because it’s been featured in so many movies, and the scenery here is absolutely incredible. We did the horseback riding tour, but honestly, I wouldn’t choose this again – the horses seemed tired and a bit overworked. If I were to do it again, I would book the ATV tour instead. It offers a similar way to explore the valley but feels more interactive and like a better overall experience. Browse options and book your own Kuala Ranch tour.

After your time at Kualoa Ranch, head over to Kaʻaʻawa Beach to relax and unwind. This is a lesser-known roadside beach with one of the most beautiful backdrops on the island – dramatic green mountains on one side and the ocean on the other. It’s the perfect spot to slow down after a full day of exploring.

Ka

Day 6: Hanauma Bay & Tiki Bar

If you love snorkeling, Hanauma Bay is an absolute must. It’s a protected marine life conservation area known for its crystal-clear water and vibrant sea life, making it one of the best snorkeling spots on Oahu – especially for beginners. The water is typically calm, and you’ll see tons of fish just by swimming a short distance from shore. Keep in mind that reservations are required to visit Hanauma Bay. You can make a reservation here.

After a relaxing beach day, head back to Waikiki and end the night at a Tiki bar. Cuckoo Coconuts is a classic spot with tropical drinks, comfort food, and live music. I loved the fun, lively vibe here – it’s a great way to switch things up after a more laid-back day.

Hanauma Bay

Day 7: Breakfast & Lanikai Beach Day

Start your morning with breakfast at ARVO. This is such a cute little spot for coffee and a light breakfast, and it has a really aesthetic, laid-back vibe. We got the loaded avocado toast and ricotta toast and both were so good!

After breakfast, spend the day at Lanikai Beach – my favorite beach on Oahu. This beach actually looks like the photos: soft white sand, clear turquoise water, and a really calm, swimmable shoreline. Getting there takes a little bit of effort, since there’s no official parking lot. You’ll need to park in the neighborhood and walk through one of the beach access paths between the houses to reach the shore. It can feel a little confusing at first, but once you find your way, it’s absolutely worth it.

The water here is usually very calm, making it perfect for swimming or just relaxing in the ocean. Just keep in mind that there are no public restrooms or facilities, so plan accordingly before heading out.

Arvo Cafe Oahu

Day 8: Byodo-In Temple & Sunrise Shack

Start your day with a visit to the Byodo-In Temple, a peaceful and scenic spot tucked into the Koʻolau Mountains. This temple is a replica of a historic Japanese temple in Kyoto and feels like a little piece of Japan right in Hawaii. The setting is beautiful, with lush mountains, koi ponds, and open green space surrounding the temple. It can get crowded fast so I recommend arriving early to enjoy it when it’s quieter.

Byodo-In Temple Oahu

After exploring the temple, head to Sunrise Shack for açaí bowls. This spot is so cute and has a really fun, beachy vibe. We went to one located in Haleiwa which I think is the cutest one. The bowls are fresh and delicious and it’s the perfect spot for photos!

Sunrise Shack Oahu

Day 9: Waterfall Hike & Resort Happy Hour

Start your day with a hike to Mānoa Falls. This is a short and relatively easy trail, making it a great option if you want something more low-effort while still getting that lush jungle experience. The path takes you through a beautiful rainforest setting with dense greenery, bamboo, and tropical plants. The waterfall at the end is nice, but I’ll be honest – it’s not the most impressive waterfall you’ll ever see. For me, the highlight was really the jungle scenery along the way rather than the destination itself.

In the afternoon, head up to the North Shore for sunset happy hour at Sunset at Turtle Bay located inside the Ritz Carlton. This was one of my favorite spots to unwind on the island. The setting is absolutely beautiful, with oceanfront views that are perfect for sunset, and the overall vibe feels much more relaxed and elevated compared to Waikiki.

Manoa Falls Trail

Day 10: Sunrise, Beach & Boat Charter

Start your final day early with sunrise at Waialae Beach. This is more of a local spot and feels much quieter compared to some of the more popular beaches around Oahu. It’s a really beautiful place to watch the sunrise, with soft light, palm trees, and fewer crowds. It’s also a popular spot for photoshoots, so if you’re looking to get some photos, this is a great place to do it.

Waialae Beach Park

After sunrise, head back toward Waikiki and spend the day at Waikiki Beach. No Oahu trip is complete without at least one beach day here. The water is usually calm and there are plenty of places nearby to grab food, drinks, or rent beach gear.

To end your trip, book a private boat charter around Waikiki. We used GetMyBoat, and it ended up being one of the most fun experiences of the trip. Having a private boat felt really special, and it’s such a great way to see the coastline from a different perspective – especially around sunset.

FAQs About visiting oahu

What is the best time to visit oahu?

Oahu is a great destination year-round, but the best time to visit is typically between April–June and September–early November. During these months, you’ll usually get great weather, fewer crowds, and slightly lower prices compared to peak seasons.

How many days do you need in oahu?

I’d recommend spending at least 7-10 days in Oahu if you want to experience more than just Waikiki. This 10 day Oahu itinerary is designed to give you a good mix of beaches, hikes, tours, and local experiences without feeling too rushed. If you have less time, you can always shorten it to fit your schedule, but I do think Oahu is best experienced over a longer trip.

Do you need a rental car in oahu?

Yes, if you plan to explore beyond Waikiki, I highly recommend renting a car. Many of the best beaches, hikes, and activities around the island aren’t easily accessible without one. I go into more detail on this above, including parking costs and tips, but overall having a car gives you the flexibility to experience much more of Oahu. A rental car is essential for your perfect 10 day Oahu itinerary. I like to book my rental cars through Expedia.
