Ocean Activities in Oahu

snorkel at Hanauma Bay

If you’re looking for one of the best things to do in Oahu Hawaii, snorkeling at Hanauma Bay is an absolute must. This is one of my favorite Oahu activities and one of the most popular snorkeling spots on the island.

Hanauma Bay is a protected marine life conservation area, which means the water is incredibly clear and full of tropical fish. Since the bay is naturally sheltered, the ocean here is usually calm, making it a much easier and more relaxed experience compared to other snorkeling spots around Oahu. This is the perfect spot for beginner snorkelers or anyone who likes an easy, safe, and low-key snorkel spot.

Best things to do in Oahu Snorkel Hanauma Bay

Before entering the beach, you’ll be required to watch a short educational video about reef safety and protecting marine life. It’s quick, but helpful for understanding how to snorkel responsibly while you’re there.

One important thing to know is that Hanauma Bay now requires advance reservations, and spots can fill up quickly. I highly recommend booking as early as possible, especially if you’re visiting during peak travel seasons. Check out the Department of Parks and Recreation website to make a reservation.

What to bring:

  • Snorkel gear (if you prefer using your own, bringing a set like this can save you from renting gear there)
  • Reef-safe sunscreen (this is required in Hawaii  – I always use this one on my tropical trips)
  • Water + snacks
  • Beach towels

Dolphin swim & snorkel tour

I highly recommend getting in the ocean to see the marine life up close when you’re in Oahu, and a dolphin swim and snorkel tour is one of the best ways to experience that. This was one of the most memorable activities from my trip and such a fun way to get out on the water and experience Oahu from a different perspective.

Most tours leave early in the morning and take you out along the west side of the island, where you’ll have the chance to see dolphins in their natural habitat. Depending on the tour, you may also stop at additional snorkel spots where you can swim with sea turtles and other marine life, which makes it feel like you’re getting multiple experiences in one.

Best things to do in Oahu swim with dolphins

Our tour guide was fully committed to helping us find dolphins and took us far out into the ocean to find them – to the point where we could no longer see land. When he spotted a pod, we quickly jumped off the moving boat so we wouldn’t miss the moment. It was such an incredible experience swimming alongside them in such a raw and natural way.

If this is something you’re considering, I recommend booking in advance since these tours are very popular. Check availability and book a dolphin swim and snorkel tour.

shark cage diving on the north shore

If you’re looking for one of the more adrenaline-filled things to do in Oahu, shark cage diving on the North Shore is definitely a must! It might sound intimidating at first, but it ends up being an incredible memory – this is still one of my favorite travel activities I have ever done.

To start the tour, you’ll head out on a boat off the North Shore of Oahu – I was actually surprised at how close to shore it was! Once anchored, you’ll be able to step off the boat into a cage in the open ocean, where you’ll come face-to-face with sharks in their natural habitat. It sounds intense, but the cage makes it feel safe and controlled, even for first-timers.

I was surprised at how many sharks were surrounding us (and again so close to shore). Many swim up right next to the cage which is such a surreal experience. I’d recommend booking this in advance, especially during peak travel seasons, since tours can fill up quickly.

sunset sail & Fireworks in Waikiki

After more adventurous activities like shark cage diving, a sunset sail in Waikiki is the perfect way to slow things down and enjoy a much more relaxed experience on the water. This activity feels easy, low-effort, and just really enjoyable from start to finish.

The sky in Hawaii tends to get incredibly colorful at sunset, with soft pinks, oranges, and purples reflecting over the water. This is a great option if you’re looking for something a little more romantic or low-key, whether you’re traveling as a couple or just want a calm way to end the day.

Best things to do in Oahu sunset sail & fireworks

If you can, I highly recommend booking your sail on a Friday night so you can also see the Waikiki fireworks from the water. Watching the fireworks from the boat adds another layer to the experience and makes it feel even more memorable.

charter a private boat in Waikiki

If you’re looking for a more elevated and personalized experience on the water, chartering a private boat in Waikiki is one of the best things to do in Oahu. This feels completely different from a typical group tour and is such a fun way to experience the island at your own pace.

Instead of following a set route with a large group, you’ll have your own captain who can take you wherever you want along the coastline. You can keep things simple and just sail around Waikiki with views of the skyline, or turn it into more of an activity by stopping to swim or snorkel, in the water.

If you’re interested in booking something like this, we used GetMyBoat to find and book our private charter. It’s a really easy way to browse different boats, compare options, and choose something that fits what you’re looking for.

relax at Oahu’s best beaches

No trip to Oahu is complete without spending time at the beach and a beach day is definitely one of the best things to do in Oahu. While there are so many beautiful options around the island, Lanikai Beach is my favorite overall.

Lanikai Beach is known for its soft white sand, calm turquoise water, and views of the Mokulua Islands just offshore. The water here is typically very gentle, making it perfect for swimming or just relaxing in the ocean. This beach feels a little more peaceful compared to some of the busier spots on the island.

One thing to keep in mind is that there’s no official parking lot, so you’ll need to park in the nearby neighborhood and walk through one of the beach access paths. It can feel a little confusing at first, but once you find your way, it’s absolutely worth it.

Land Adventures & Experiences

explore Kuala ranch

If you’re looking for one of the most iconic things to do in Oahu, visiting Kualoa Ranch is an absolute must – especially for first-timers. This area is often referred to as “Jurassic Valley” because it’s been featured in Jurassic Park and so many other movies and shows. The scenery here is incredible – including lush green mountains, wide open valleys, and some of the most dramatic landscapes on the island.

There are a few different ways to experience Kualoa Ranch. We booked a horseback riding tour, however, I actually would not do this again and don’t recommend it. The horses seemed very tired, bored, and overworked, and I honestly felt bad for my horse during the tour. I would highly recommend an ATV tour instead. You get to see many of the same spots, but it looked like a much more immersive and enjoyable experience overall.

I recommend booking your tour in advance since this is one of the most popular activities on the island and spots can fill up quickly.

crouching lion hike

If you’re someone who enjoys more off-the-beaten-path hikes and doesn’t mind a bit of a challenge, the Crouching Lion Hike is one of the best things to do in Oahu.

This is not a maintained or officially marked trail, so it’s definitely better suited for more experienced hikers who feel confident navigating less defined paths. There are no signs or designated parking areas, and the entrance can be a bit difficult to find, so it does take a little extra effort just to get started.

The hike itself is short but steep and includes sections with ropes and light rock scrambling. There are parts where you’ll need to use your hands to climb, and some areas can feel exposed, especially if you’re afraid of heights (like me!).

That said, if you’re a confident and experienced hiker, the view at the top is absolutely worth it. You’ll be rewarded with beautiful panoramic views of the coastline and the bay below. There was a point during this hike where I wasn’t sure I was going to make it to the top, and my fear of heights was definitely an obstacle I had to push through, but it is still one of my favorite and most memorable hiking experiences.

Safety note: This hike can be dangerous, and there have been fatal accidents here in the past. Only attempt this hike if you feel fully comfortable with the conditions, wear proper shoes, and do not attempt in wet or slippery conditions.

Hike manoa falls

If you’re looking for a much easier and more low-key hike compared to Crouching Lion, the Mānoa Falls hike is a great option. This one has a completely different feel. Instead of steep climbs and exposed ocean views, you’ll be walking through a lush jungle setting with dense greenery, bamboo, and tropical plants the entire way.

This is one of the more popular and tourist-friendly hikes on Oahu, and it’s also very easy to access since it’s located just outside of Honolulu. The trail is well-defined and relatively short, making it a good choice if you want something scenic without a big physical challenge.

Best things to do in Oahu Hike Moana Falls

I’ll be honest – I found the waterfall itself to be a little underwhelming, but the jungle scenery along the way was what really made this hike worth it for me – the entire trail feels like you’re walking through a rainforest.

Overall, even though the waterfall wasn’t my favorite, I still think this hike is worth doing for the beautiful jungle setting and how easy it is to fit into your itinerary.

zipline course

If you’re looking for a fun, adventurous activity, a zipline course on the North Shore is a great option and one of the best Oahu activities.

What I loved most about this course is the setting. Some of the lines had incredible views of the ocean, and you’re literally gliding toward it as you zip across. It’s a really fun mix of adventure and scenery, without being too intimidating.

This is a popular activity so I recommend booking in advance since time slots can fill up quickly. Check availability and book a zipline course – I did the one with CLIMB Works on the North Shore.

Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden

If you’re looking for the best photo spots with breathtaking scenery, Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden is definitely one of the best Oahu activities to add to your list – and it’s completely free to visit.

You’ve probably seen the iconic entrance road on Instagram, where the mountains line up perfectly in the distance. While you’re no longer allowed to stop your car in the middle of the road for photos, you can still capture the view as you drive in, and it’s just as stunning. Once you’re inside the garden, there are so many beautiful areas to explore and take photos.

byodo-In temple

Visiting the Byodo-In Temple is a beautiful stop to add to your itinerary. Tucked into the base of the Koʻolau Mountains, this spot feels completely different from the rest of the island.

The temple is a replica of a historic Japanese temple in Kyoto and feels like a little piece of Japan right in Hawaii. The setting is incredibly serene, with lush mountains in the background, koi ponds surrounding the temple.

If you’re looking for a quieter experience, I recommend arriving early in the morning as this is a very popular activity and crowds get bigger as the day goes on.

dinner at Haleiwa joe’s at haiku Gardens

If you’re looking for a more unique and memorable dining experience in Oahu, Haleiwa Joe’s at Haiku Gardens is an absolute must. This has to be one of the most beautiful dinner settings on the island and it ended up being my favorite dining experience in Oahu.

The restaurant is set within a lush tropical garden surrounded by the Koʻolau Mountains, and the entire space feels like you’re dining in the middle of a jungle.

One thing to know is that they don’t take reservations, but that’s actually part of the experience. While you wait for your table, you can walk around the gardens, explore the property, and take photos which makes the whole experience feel much more than just dinner.

I’d recommend going earlier in the evening since this is one of the most popular restaurants on Oahu and wait times can get long.

sunrise photos at Waialae beach park

Waialae Beach Park is one of the best places in Oahu for beautiful sunrise photos and a great Oahu activity to add to your itinerary. The lighting at sunrise is really soft, and the beach tends to be much quieter compared to other popular areas, which makes it ideal if you’re looking to get photos without a lot of people around.

If you’re traveling solo or as a couple, this is a great place to set up a tripod or just take more casual photos. You can also book a local photographer if you’re looking for something more professional. You can use resources like Flytographer to find the perfect photographer for your vacation photos.

Tips for Planning Oahu Activities

Planning ahead can make a big difference when it comes to experiencing the best Oahu activities without stress. Here are a few simple tips to help you make the most of your trip:

  • Book tours in advance: Many of the most popular Oahu activities (like snorkeling tours, ziplining, and Kualoa Ranch) can sell out quickly, especially during peak travel seasons. You can compare options at Get Your Guide or Viator
  • Rent a car for flexibility: If you want to explore beyond Waikiki and experience more of the island, having a rental car is a must. Some tours might offer hotel pickup but most of the best Oahu activities require having your own car. Book your rental car.
  • Best time to visit: Oahu is a year-round destination, but spring (April–June) and fall (September–October) tend to have the best combination of good weather, fewer crowds, and slightly lower prices.

FAQ’s: Things to do in Oahu

What are the best things to do in Oahu for first-time visitors?

If it’s your first time visiting Oahu, the best way to experience the island is by planning a mix of beaches, tours, and hikes, and sightseeing so you can see a little bit of everything – this is the best approach to experiencing the best things to do in Oahu.

I’d recommend starting with some of the more iconic experiences, like spending time at the beach (Waikiki or Lanikai), getting out on the water with a snorkeling or boat tour, adding in at least one hike, and adding at least one sightseeing experience to get a well-rounded perspective of the island.

How many days do you need in Oahu?

If you want to experience the best of Oahu without feeling rushed, I’d recommend spending around 10 days on the island. This gives you enough time to explore different areas, mix in a variety of activities, and still have time to relax.

That said, if you’re shorter on time, you can still have a great trip in 5–7 days by focusing on a few key activities and areas. Oahu is relatively easy to navigate, so even a shorter trip can still feel well-rounded with the right planning.

Do you need a car in Oahu?

Yes, a rental car is a must if you want to experience the best activities on Oahu. Some tours might offer hotel pick-up but most activities on this list require having your own car – especially if you’re going to experience activities on the North Shore or the windward side of the island. I usually book my rental cars through Expedia.
