10 Best Things To Do In The Bahamas for First-Time Visitors

No trip to the Bahamas feels complete without visiting the iconic Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island. Known for its massive pink towers, sprawling white sand beaches, luxury accommodations, and world-famous Atlantis Bahamas water park, Atlantis has become one of the most recognizable resorts in the Caribbean and is easily one of the best things to do in the Bahamas for first-time visitors.

Whether you choose to stay at the resort for a few nights or simply purchase a day pass, Atlantis offers the perfect mix of relaxation, adventure, nightlife, and family-friendly activities all in one place. 

Whether or not Atlantis Bahamas is worth visiting really depends on your travel style and budget, but personally, I absolutely think it is worth it – even if you only have time to visit for the day. The resort is home to one of the most famous water parks in the Caribbean, beautiful resort beaches, massive pools, luxury dining, casinos, shopping, marine exhibits, and endless activities that make it feel like a destination all on its own. If you are visiting the Bahamas for the first time, I think experiencing Atlantis at least once is a must.

That being said, if your budget allows for it, I highly recommend staying at the resort instead of only purchasing a day pass. There is so much to do at Atlantis that it is difficult to fully experience everything in just one day, and there is something special about waking up right on Paradise Island and having full access to the resort throughout your stay.

I would personally come back to Atlantis again and again. It is also one of the best family vacation destinations in the Bahamas because there truly is something here for everyone – whether you are looking for relaxing beach days, nightlife, luxury, kid-friendly activities, or nonstop adventure.

There are endless things to do at Atlantis Bahamas beyond just lounging at the resort. Atlantis is home to a massive casino, luxury shopping, fine dining restaurants, nightlife, and even an impressive aquarium and marine habitat. While all of those things are worth exploring, my favorite part of Atlantis was easily the water activities.

From thrilling waterslides and lazy rivers to beautiful resort pools and white sand beaches, Atlantis truly feels like a giant tropical playground. If you love being in the water as much as I do, you will have no shortage of adventures to keep you busy here.

One of the most iconic attractions at Atlantis Bahamas is the famous Leap of Faith waterslide. This nearly vertical slide drops riders down from the top of the resort’s Mayan temple at high speed before shooting them through a clear tunnel submerged inside a shark-filled lagoon. Even just standing at the top of the slide was enough to trigger my fear of heights – it honestly looks almost like a straight drop down. I fully intended to ride it, but once I reached the top, I completely chickened out and decided I was not brave enough to make the leap after all.

Luckily, there is another waterslide located right next to Leap of Faith that ended up becoming one of my favorite experiences at Atlantis. Instead of a near-vertical drop, this slide has you riding in an intertube through multiple twists, turns, and drops before floating you directly underneath the shark enclosure in a clear glass tunnel. Watching sharks swim all around you while slowly drifting through the water was such a surreal experience and something I ended up riding multiple times during our stay. Even if you are not brave enough for Leap of Faith, there are still plenty of fun water slides at Atlantis that are a little less terrifying.

One of the best parts about Atlantis Bahamas is that there are so many different beaches and pools to choose from throughout the resort. Each pool area has its own atmosphere and theme, so whether you are looking for a lively family-friendly pool with music and activities or a quieter luxury experience, there is truly something for everyone. 

One pool that especially caught my attention was the adults-only pool located at The Cove Atlantis. Access to this pool is reserved for guests staying at The Cove tower, making it feel much more exclusive and peaceful compared to some of the busier family pools around the resort. The entire area feels incredibly luxurious with loungers, private cabanas, and an upscale atmosphere. If I were to return to Atlantis, I would absolutely book a room at The Cove specifically so I could access this pool.

During our stay, we also rented a beach day bed which I highly recommend if you plan on spending a full day relaxing by the ocean. Atlantis offers food and beverage service directly to your day bed or pool cabana, which makes the experience feel even more luxurious and convenient.

Aquaventure Water Park is easily one of the biggest highlights of Atlantis Bahamas and honestly exceeded all of my expectations. The entire water park feels incredibly immersive and well-designed with lush tropical landscaping, Mayan-inspired architecture, waterfalls, rapids, and waterslides spread throughout the massive resort property. The quality and theming honestly reminded me of a Disney-level experience rather than a typical resort water park. Even if you are not usually someone who loves water parks, Aquaventure is worth experiencing.

One of our favorite parts of the park was the lazy river system that winds throughout Atlantis. You can relax and float through certain sections on an intertube, or you can bring your tube to the top of various waterslides throughout the park which eventually launch you back into the river below. We ended up riding these slides over and over again because it was such a fun experience seamlessly floating from one attraction to another. Some sections are calm and relaxing while others turn into intense rapids that throw you around unexpectedly. We spent multiple days just enjoying the water park alone.

One of the most unforgettable experiences at Atlantis Bahamas was visiting Dolphin Cay and getting the opportunity to interact with dolphins up close. I know there are definitely ethical concerns surrounding dolphin encounters and marine animal experiences in general, which is something I considered beforehand as well.

What made me feel more comfortable about Dolphin Cay specifically is that many of the dolphins there were rescued or rehabilitated animals that could not safely return to the wild. Knowing that the facility focuses heavily on marine animal rescue, rehabilitation, and conservation made the experience feel much more ethical compared to some other dolphin attractions.

I have loved dolphins ever since I was a child, so being able to see them this close and interact with them in person felt incredibly special to me. Atlantis offers a few different dolphin experiences depending on how interactive you want the encounter to be. One option allows you to get into the water and swim with the dolphins, while another experience is even more hands-on with additional interaction and activities alongside the trainers. 

My personal opinion is that you should definitely stay at Atlantis if you can, even if it is only for a few nights. We stayed at the resort for an entire week and absolutely loved our experience there, and I truly think it is one of the best options for first-time visitors to the Bahamas.

There is so much to do throughout the resort that it is difficult to fully experience everything in just one day. However, if budget is a concern, I still think it is completely worth purchasing a day pass so you can experience the water park, beaches, pools, and overall atmosphere of Atlantis for yourself.

One of the best things to do in the Bahamas is book a snorkeling and island hopping excursion while visiting Nassau. There are so many different Nassau excursions and tours to choose from depending on the type of experience you are looking for.

Some excursions focus more on snorkeling and sailing while others include stops at places like Pig Beach, private islands, sandbars, or secluded beaches for swimming and relaxing. Most full-day tours will include multiple stops throughout the day, giving you the chance to experience the crystal clear water and remote islands the Bahamas is famous for.

We personally chose a full-day Sail and Snorkel Catamaran Excursion with Flying Cloud and were extremely happy with our experience. Our tour included two separate snorkeling stops as well as a stop at Rose Island Beach where we had time to swim, relax, and lounge on the beach. Rose Island ended up being one of my favorite beaches we visited during our trip with its soft white sand and unbelievably turquoise water.

One of the most unique places to visit in the Bahamas is Harbour Island, a small island known for its famous pink sand beaches, colorful pastel buildings, charming streets, and laid-back atmosphere. Compared to the larger resort areas in Nassau, Harbour Island feels much quieter and more local with a relaxed remote tropical island vibe. Walking through the island feels like stepping into a postcard with golf carts cruising down narrow streets lined with vibrant buildings, boutique hotels, and palm trees swaying overhead.

One of the most affordable ways to visit Harbour Island from Nassau is by ferry, although the ferry ride takes about three hours each way so it can make for a very long day trip. I personally visited Harbour Island as a day trip and loved the experience, but looking back, I would recommend staying overnight or even spending a few nights on the island if your schedule and budget allow for it. Harbour Island has such a peaceful atmosphere that it deserves more than just a rushed day visit. If you are interested in taking the ferry, you can browse schedules and book tickets through Bahamas Ferries.

The first thing I did after departing the ferry was rent a golf cart to explore Dunmore Town. There are no cars on Harbour Island, so the main ways to get around are by foot or golf cart. Luckily, there are vendors renting golf carts right at the ferry terminal, making it very easy to grab one as soon as you arrive on the island. One thing to keep in mind is that the golf cart rentals are cash only, so make sure to bring enough cash with you ahead of time.

I highly recommend simply driving around for awhile to explore Dunmore Town and enjoy the colorful streets and laid-back island atmosphere. There are so many beautiful spots to pull over and take photos, especially with all of the pastel-colored buildings, tropical landscaping, and charming little side streets throughout town. The island is very small, so it does not take long before you have seen most of the town.

One of the main reasons people visit Harbour Island is to see the island’s famous Pink Sand Beach. The beach gets its soft pink hue from tiny red and pink microscopic coral insects called foraminifera that mix with the white sand along the shoreline. Personally, when I visited, the sand only appeared slightly pink, although I have heard the color can look more vibrant depending on the lighting, weather, and season.

What I loved most about Pink Sand Beach was how peaceful and uncrowded it felt compared to Nassau. The beach itself is massive, so even during the middle of the day there were hardly any people around. Boutique luxury resorts line the beach, giving the entire area a secluded and upscale atmosphere. I spent time simply walking along the shoreline before stopping at one of the beachfront resorts for lunch. The quiet atmosphere of Harbour Island felt like a completely different world compared to the busy resorts and crowds in Nassau.

Taking a day trip to the Exuma was hands down my favorite day of our entire Bahamas trip. The Exuma Islands in the Bahamas are absolutely breathtaking and if I were to visit the Bahamas again, I would 100% plan time in my itinerary to actually stay in the Exumas for a few nights. The islands have such a wild and untouched feeling with unbelievably clear turquoise water, soft white sand beaches, tiny remote islets, and endless shades of blue stretching in every direction. It genuinely feels like paradise and I truly think experiencing the Exumas is an absolute must for first-time visitors to the Bahamas.

We started our excursion with a high-speed boat ride from Nassau to the Exumas, which honestly felt like an adventure all on its own. The ride was incredibly fast and bumpy at times and had us clutching onto the rails the entire way across the ocean. Once we arrived in the Exumas, our tour brought us to Allen Cay where we got to feed the famous island iguanas before continuing on to a private island where we interacted with swimming pigs, nurse sharks, and stingrays.

It was such a surreal and unforgettable experience being surrounded by so many animals in water that looked almost impossibly blue. We absolutely loved our tour and if you are looking for an unforgettable Exuma excursion from Nassau, I highly recommend booking the same experience we did.

One of the first stops on our Exuma excursion was Allen Cay where we got to feed the famous Bahamian rock iguanas that live on the island. Seeing dozens of iguanas running down the beach toward the boats was such a unique experience and definitely something I had never done before. Later in the day, we also had the chance to interact with nurse sharks and stingrays in the shallow crystal clear water of our own private island.

Swimming with the famous Exuma pigs is easily one of the most classic Bahamas bucket list experiences. While it is definitely a touristy activity, it is still a fun and memorable experience.

One thing to keep in mind when booking an Exuma pig tour is that not all tours visit the original wild pigs at Pig Beach. Many tours, including the one we personally did, use company-owned pigs that live on privately operated islands and are cared for by the tour staff. The pigs on our excursion lived on their own private island and appeared very well cared for. If visiting the original wild swimming pigs is important to you, I definitely recommend researching tours carefully ahead of booking to make sure you choose the type of experience you are looking for.

One of my favorite parts of our tour was the stop at a private island where we spent several hours relaxing on the beach. The island had beach loungers, lunch, and an open bar included. We had plenty of time to swim in the insanely clear water and even swim alongside sharks and stingrays right off the beach. The entire area felt incredibly secluded and peaceful and looked exactly like the kind of tropical paradise you picture when dreaming about the Bahamas.

Yes, absolutely. Atlantis Bahamas is definitely touristy, but it is also a very fun and unique experience that I think is worth visiting at least once – especially for first-time visitors to the Bahamas. Between the massive water park, beautiful beaches, luxury pools, and endless activities, there is truly something for everyone.

Yes, you can absolutely visit the Exuma as a day trip from Nassau, which is what we personally did during our trip. If you do not have the time or budget to stay on multiple islands, a day excursion is still an incredible experience. That being said, if I were to visit again, I would absolutely try to stay in the Exumas for a few nights because the islands are so beautiful.

Yes, Harbour Island is definitely worth visiting if you have extra time in your itinerary. The island is beautiful, peaceful, and very unique compared to Nassau. However, if you are trying to choose between the Exuma Islands and Harbour Island, I would personally prioritize visiting the Exumas first.

The best time to visit the Bahamas is generally between December and April when the weather is warm, dry, and less humid. We visited in April and had absolutely perfect weather with sunny skies, very little rain, and surprisingly low humidity.

Yes, I think the Bahamas is an excellent destination for first-time international travelers, especially for visitors coming from the United States. English is widely spoken, the islands are very tourism-friendly, and there are many direct flights available from major U.S. cities. It is a relatively easy international destination that still feels incredibly tropical and exotic.

Yes, the Bahamas can definitely be an expensive destination, especially when it comes to resorts, excursions, dining, and island hopping activities. However, there are still ways to make the trip more budget-friendly by staying at more affordable accommodations, choosing a few priority excursions, and visiting fewer islands during your trip.

From relaxing at Atlantis Resort and sailing through crystal clear water to swimming alongside sharks in the Exumas and exploring the colorful streets of Harbour Island, there are so many unforgettable things to do in the Bahamas for first-time visitors.
